Spanon reviews:

"...a fusion of electro, dubstep, and darker elements of electronic music. The beats brood and crawl, and the atmospherics stare at you from the shadows of a dark alley. The music is powerful and menacing, at once imposing a sense of fear and inexorably pulling the listener along..."

".....In the ashes of the complex structure called IDM we see a lot of beautiful new stuff created. Leader of the pack is no doubt Nosaj Thing who combines the inheritance of IDM with the avant-hip-hop we now call abstract beats (the Beat Dimensions-ish beats). It’s a difficult precarious trajectory because the thin line between nerdism over aesthetism and other ism’s are in the ambush to claim you and suffocate you in that pillow of IDM..."

The latest offering from Japan's Symbolic Interaction is a CD by Ard Bit called 'Spanon'.Ard Bit is the work of Ard Janssen who as far as I can tell has only had a couple of tracks out on compilations for On Records and N5MD. So it would appear that this is his debut album and it's a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Essentially it's an album of well crafted electronics, and cold electro. Phil has just spewed a whole bunch of reference points including Funkstorung, Neo Ouija, Cottage Industries etc. There is a slight dubstep influence at times in terms of some of the basslines. It veers from the slightly abstract to straight up accessible head nodding grooves with some smart melodies hovering about.

Imagine if Autechre had not let the inmates (the machines, that is) taken over the asylum after EP7 and had instead chosen a more atmospheric, restrained, and chilled direction. Something like Spanon by Ard Bit (Rotterdam-based Ard Janssen) might have been the result—material that's admittedly less visionary than Chiastic Slide and LP5 but a helluva lot more listenable than Confield and its ilk.
